Dan’s legs ached, and his face was cold by the time he reached Coffin Cemetery.

He let himself into the schoolhouse and started a fire in the stove. As he did so, Madame Haupt entered the classroom and smiled at him.

“Dan Tate, it is a pleasure to see you.”

Dan offered her a weary smile. “And it is a pleasure to see you as well.”

Once he had the fire going, Dan settled on the floor next to it. “Have you heard any news?”

The dead woman shook her head. “We would have sent word. I am surprised you have taken this long to come and ask.”

“I’ve been having some trouble.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“My ex-wife,” he explained, “she’s denying me access to my children.”

Madame Haupt frowned. “Would you like someone to go and have a talk with her?”

Dan let out a surprised laugh, and he shook his head. “No. Not at all. Thank you, though.”

“Why do you laugh?”

“Jess, my ex-wife, she wouldn’t believe whoever you sent, and if she did think it was real, she would blame me.” Dan sighed. “No. Thank you. It would only make more trouble for me in the end.”

“Well, when will you see your children?”

“Soon, I hope.” He held his hands up in front of the fire and then rubbed them, working circulation back into the chilled fingers. “We’ll see.”

“I am sorry for your misfortune,” Madame Haupt said after a moment of silence. “Truly, I am, Dan Tate. I wish I had news for you as well. Have you thought of speaking with the boy?”

“Eli?”

She shook her head. “No. Steven.”

“Oh. I’d forgotten.”

Madame Haupt smiled gently. “Perhaps you should remember? My ancestor would do well to remember, too.”

“Eli?”

She nodded. “He is a smart and good boy, Eli is, but headstrong, I am afraid. He knows of your difficulties with your former wife?”

“He does.”

“Be wary that he does not take matters into his own hands.” Madame Haupt glanced at the fire, and a small, nostalgic smile crossed her face. “I remember that sensation, Mr. Tate. The joyous warmth of a fire after a brisk walk. Enjoy it.”

“I will.”

The dead woman bade him goodbye and then walked out of the classroom with slow and measured steps. Dan watched her go, then looked back to the fire and thought about visiting Steven.
